Go Coach Optare Metrocity goes for Gold with Olympic Medalist

Last Wednesday 18 April Go-coach worked with Sevenoaks District Council to take double winter Olympic champion Lizzy Yarnold on a victory parade around local schools and the district.

Lizzy traveled in an open top Routemaster, and this was supported by go-coach’s new gold Optare Metrocity.

Lizzy Yarnold who lived and went to school in Sevenoaks won consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018. She is the most successful British Winter Olympian and the most successful Olympic Skeleton athlete of all time from any nation.

“We operated her tour of Sevenoaks back in 2014 and were more than happy to do the same this time, using the new gold Optare Metrocity to carry council workers and press. It was the perfect opportunity to use the gold bus, and the Metrocity says all the right things.”

Optare, one of the UK’s leading bus manufacturers and subsidiary of Indian-based Ashok Leyland are to supply 94 Solo buses to Dubai to the Roads and Transport Authority in a deal valued at circa £18m.

Optare will supply 8.5m Solos featuring Cummins Euro 5 engines, air conditioning, with a high specification including onboard wifi and smart phone USB charging sockets.  The buses will seat up to 24 passengers with additional standing capacity and enter service in quarter one of 2019.

Optare celebrates International Market success with launch of 114 Metrocity buses in New Zealand

Optare, one of the UK’s leading bus manufacturers and subsidiary of Indian-based Ashok Leyland, has marked the delivery of the first batch of 114 Metrocity buses to New Zealand at a special ceremony today at the British High Commission in the country’s capital, Wellington.

Acting British High Commissioner, Helen Smith cut the ribbon on the first bus of Optare’s biggest ever Australasian export order, worth NZ$40m (£21m).

The innovative and environmentally efficient Metrocity buses are being supplied to Tranzit Group, one of New Zealand’s largest public transport operators.  The first 12 of the buses, all manufactured in the UK, will begin operation around Greater Wellington Regional Council routes in Wellington and the surrounding region in the next few weeks.

The Metrocity buses for Tranzit feature Euro 6 compliant engines, an innovative monocoque design, have a passenger capacity of up to 55 and will be the lightest with this capacity to operate in New Zealand.

“This is a significant step for Optare in our international export strategy and signals the start of the exciting growth opportunities available to us in Australasia.  Furthermore, it recognises our continued innovation in lightweight design, delivering significant annual savings in fuel consumption and operating costs.”

Graham Belgum, President of Optare

“The Metrocity buses were purpose-built to meet the demands of the Wellington region’s commuter network.

“They’re top-of-the-line and exactly what we need to give the region’s commuters the very best service possible. As well as being Euro 6 certified, which is the highest possible and newest global emissions standard, the Metrocity buses weigh 900kg less than comparable vehicles, use much less fuel and can carry more passengers.

“We’ve ordered a combination of 10.1m and 10.8m Metrocity buses, which means we’ll have the right buses available to best service the mix of the city, suburban and semi-rural routes we’ll be operating. The shorter buses are much easier to manoeuvre and are ideal for tight, twisty routes,” said Snelgrove.

“At Greater Wellington we’re on our way to a more integrated public transport network so we can take more people to more places, more often. An important part of our strategy is reducing the emissions from our fleet. Metlink is doing that through a major renewal programme that will mean 80% of the buses on the region’s roads are new vehicles, providing a 68% reduction in harmful emissions.”

“We are delighted to be providing warranty and full aftermarket support for the vehicles and are working closely with Optare to expand the product reach to operators in New Zealand and Australia.

Bus Corp Oceania is a strong and well-resourced distributor and is very much focused on ensuring that the Optare message is heard across the region. This is the message of an advanced monocoque design which delivers integrity and strength but minimises weight resulting in better fuel consumption and lower emissions.  We are already seeing people sit up and take notice of Optare and this new fleet of Optare buses for Tranzit is just the beginning of resurgence of the brand down under.”

Jason Pecotic, General Manager of Bus Corp Oceania (Optare’s dealer and partners in Australia and New Zealand)

New gold Metrocity for go-coach 10-year anniversary

Kent’s largest independent bus operator, go-coach has just taken delivery of its first new bus, a Metrocity 10.8m direct from Optare.

The 37-seat bus is painted gold to mark go-coach hire’s 10th anniversary this year and is being used on route 431 from Sevenoaks to Orpington. This takes the gold bus into the predominantly TfL red bus world in Orpington and has already received positive comments from passengers.  “We wanted to do something special and already having 20 Optare Solo and Versa products in the fleet, Optare was our natural choice for a new bus. I cannot fault the help and service Chris Hunt and Optare have given to us.” Austin Blackburn, Managing Director said.

The bus features USB charging points and a CD player for passenger comfort. “We are pushing our passengers to use their phones to track our buses and access bus information, but until now we have not given them the opportunity to charge their mobile devices. As we all know a well-used phone may not last a day. Passenger consultation has shown that most people have 4G on their phones so wi-fi is now not needed” Austin added.

One of the buses regular drivers commented how warm, comfortable and relaxing it is to drive, “The Metrocity has Cummins Euro 5 engine, coupled to a Allison 2100 gearbox. “We decided to not go for euro 6 as I feel the Mercedes engine is a complex product, and the Cummins is very well known to us. It is relatively simple, with good maintenance access, and smooth, put powerful 201 HP engine.”

“The new vehicle is a substantial improvement on the 10-year-old vehicles which this route commenced with last year. Primarily this bus will operate on route 431 Sevenoaks to Orpington. Passengers on the bus will benefit from USB charging points and improved journey comfort. The vehicle has already received acclaim from passengers and drivers alike.”

Andy Wells, go-coach Operations Manager

“I am delighted go-coach has chosen the Optare Metrocity as their first new bus purchase which will compliment perfectly the growing Optare fleet they already operate.”

Chris Hunt, Optare, Regional Sales Manager

Optare Solo begins operation in Hong Kong

An Optare Solo designed specifically for operation in Hong Kong, has commenced service on Hong Kong Island green minibus (GMB) route No. 54M (Kennedy Town Station – Queen Mary Hospital).  The Hong Kong Transport Department will evaluate the bus on route no.54, and plans to trial the Solo on another two hospital routes operating via Prince of Wales Hospital and St Teresa’s Hospital respectively.

The Solo’s unique combination of, shorter length, narrow width, low floor access and high seat capacity are considered ideal for the routes it will serve in Hong Kong.  The vehicle’s low floor makes it accessible to all passengers including wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility.  The Solo can be boarded quicker and easier than high floor minibus equivalents.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Transport Department, said, “We are glad to announce that the first low-floor wheelchair accessible Public Light Bus (PLB) will be put into service in order to further promote the concept of transport for all. The trial scheme is one of the measures put forward in the Public Transport Strategy Study published in June 2017, with an aim to facilitating wheelchair users to use PLB services.”

“The low floor Solo is a first for Hong Kong and it is hoped that the vehicle will improve travel for all passengers and people with disabilities in particular.  The Solo’s higher seat capacity should help address a shortage of drivers in Hong Kong also.  Following a successful trial, there is potential for the Solo to enter the bus market in Hong Kong as a programme of upgrading the existing high floor minibus fleet begins.”
